More Info

Billy Idol: While he may not have been the first British punk rocker in the world, Billy Idol has been at the forefront of the genre since 1976, both with his band Generation X and his incredibly successful solo career. After 35 years of playing music, Idol continues to play tour dates to enormous crowds and, while there has been no announcement as to a new album, Billy has been playing new songs on his concert schedules. There's a strong possibility that these songs will make their way into Billy Idol's setlist on the few upcoming tour dates in 2011, giving fans just a taste of what the rock legend has planned for the future.

William Michael Albert Broad, better known as Billy Idol, was involved with the punk movement in London from a young age. In the mid 70s, he became a part of a group of Sex Pistols followers known as the Bromley Contingent, most of which would go on to revolutionize punk in their own right. One of those followers was Siouxsie Sioux, whom he briefly joined musically in an early incarnation of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Idol then joined the band Chelsea, but soon quit with bandmates John Towe and Tony James to form Generation X. The band was the first to play a tour date at The Roxy and recorded three successful records before disbanding because of creative differences.

Billy Idol used the Generation X song, "Dancing with Myself", on his debut solo EP, Don't Stop, after traveling to the US to begin his solo career. The single, along with a cover of "Mony Mony" became instant hits; Idol continues to feature these songs on tour dates to this day. Billy Idol's first and second solo LPs -- Billy Idol (1982) and Rebel Yell (1983) -- received acclaim thanks to hit singles like "White Wedding", "Hot in the City", "Rebel Yell", and "Eyes Without a Face." Idol's popularity spread even further thanks to music videos for the singles that experienced heavy rotation on MTV. Idol's third solo album, Whiplash Smile also did very well and was supported by the singles "To Be a Lover" and "Sweet Sixteen." 1990's Charmed Life was a hit record supported by the single "Cradle of Love", the music video for which won an MTV Video Music Award. That same year, one of Idol's tour dates included a performance at Roger Waters' The Wall Live in Berlin.

Idol's career stalled in 90s as 80s stars were being pushed to the background. In 2005, his career was revived with the release of Devil's Playground, which featured a few covers and a slew of new hit music. While Billy Idol hasn't released much new material in recent years, he continues to feature popular concert schedules, including tour dates in 2011. Beginning on October 12, Idol will play a number of concert dates in California, ending on October 21 in Santa Ynez. Fans of Billy Idol should seize this opportunity to catch 2011 tour dates for this punk rock legend in his 35th year as a music icon.
